Featured Artist Spotlight – Elisabetta Stoinich

Cayce Garrison — May 14, 2018

Lets give a big welcome to our newest Featured Artist, Elisabetta Stoinich, and her incredibly unique book Literary Masters.

Introduction

Elisabetta Stoinich is an eclectic illustrator born and raised in a small Ligurian seaside village, from a Croatian father and a Genoese mother. Now she lives in Milan with her husband and two children. Painting, drawing and reading old books are her favorite things to do, it’s a pity there’s so little time in a day!

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating was something you absolutely had to do?

There hasn’t been a particular point in time, I’ve always drawn with passion and zeal, it has been natural for me. I loved to tell stories and to draw fictional houses in which I would have loved to live. Then I’ve passed through many periods; surreal anthills, fashion design and finally comics. Drawing has been essential in my life, a need to be satisfied at all costs and, luckily, it’s now my job.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created?

It’s not easy to tell: probably the “Wuthering Heights” coloring book that I made for Little Tiger Press. It has been a very exhausting project because my daughter was only 6 months old at the time, there were a lot of figures to draw and very detailed. But now, when I look at the book, I must say that I’m really satisfied. I also love “Wuthering Heights” as a novel therefore it has been really pleasurable to draw a coloring book based on it.

What’s the best advice you ever had about how to be more creative?

The advice that completely changed the way I communicate through images came from a friend of mine. She told me to keep a daily diary composed by images. Through metaphors and allegories I’ve started to draw everything was happening to me and how I felt. Other than learning a lot of useful techniques and improve my skills it also helped me to build a huge archive of images and ideas that really helped me in my job. I really recommend trying to do this  to all people that love to draw.

Are there other coloring book artists or illustrators that inspire you?

Currently I really admire Amelie Flechaise and Isabelle Arsenault, the Roman times portraits, the Flemish painters, Modigliani and I love all the illustrators that can master the watercolor techniques. I hope I will be able to master them myself…sooner or later.
