Featured Artist Spotlight – Madison Scott

Cayce Garrison — March 6, 2018

We would like to introduce to you our Featured Artist for this week, Madison Scott. In her book, Lost In Nature, Madison explores the intersection of mandalas and animals. Enjoy!

I am a young mandala artist that lives in the United States. I print my designs on a variety of products, such as stickers, tapestries, note cards and blankets. My stuff is sold in stores in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. I have also had the opportunity to draw designs for a variety of companies.

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating was something you absolutely had to do?

I started drawing when I was in middle because I hated everything about school except art class. I was not good at drawing when I first picked up a pencil but what I liked about art is that there is no right or wrong.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created?

I think my favorite thing I have ever created was a four by four foot black and white mandala on a piece of wood. Freehanded with paint pens, it took over 15 hours to complete. That was the first time I did something at that large of a scale and to see my work that big was one of the coolest feelings.

What’s the best advice you ever had about how to be more creative?

The best advice I’ve ever had of how to be more creative was when someone introduced me to the use of patterns and creating them in black ink with a pen. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of creating art because it led to what I do now, drawing mandalas. Mandalas are just a bunch of simple lines and shapes layered on top of each other that create something so detailed and beautiful.

Are there other coloring book artists or illustrators that inspire you?

Many different artists and people inspire me everyday. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature.
