Cayce Garrison — April 10, 2018

Our latest Featured Artist, Rachel Fox, brings her cartoon inspired characters with an interactive aspect to Pigment to see how you add your flair to the scenes.

Introduction

Hi! I’m Rachel. I’m a dog loving, coffee guzzling illustrator living in the Pacific Northwest. If I’m not drawing, odds are you’ll find me hiking in the woods or swimming in the ocean with my dog Charles.

Can you describe the time when you first realized that creating was something you absolutely had to do?

I’ve loved drawing as long as I can remember. But honestly, it was only after a looong trail of failed or abandoned career choices that I realized I had to do something creative. Nothing else really made me happy or held my interest long term. So finally I decided to focus on what I wanted to do, not what I thought I was supposed to do.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve ever created?

That’s a tough question. I use a lot of different mediums and drift in and out of a lot of different styles, but cartoons are probably my favorite category of things to draw.

What’s the best advice you ever had about how to be more creative?

Follow what you’re most passionate about as thoroughly and intensely as you can. Read, watch, play, listen – just immerse yourself in the things that inspire you. Surround yourself with people who support you and the creativity will come, not always without a struggle, but it will come

Are there other coloring book artists or illustrators that inspire you?

Absolutely! The illustrators behind “Scooby Doo”, “The Jetsons”, “The Flintstones”  … basically the entire Hanna-Barbera universe is unparalleled. Craig McCraken, the genius behind the “The Powerpuff Girls”. Butch Hartman, the creator of “Fairly Odd Parents”. Anything by Justin Hilgrove, Christopher Hart, or Lora Zombie.  Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn who brought us the glorious show “Daria”. And of course Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski who created “Batman: The Animated Series”.
