Five Ways to Maintain a Productive Atmosphere at Home
July 28, 2020
By Siobhan Stewart
With much of the country still struggling to reopen amidst the pandemic, more and more professionals are settling into remote work roles. This, of course, raises the question: will we continue to work from home after the pandemic? While a lot of things may seem out of our control, we can make strides to do our very best with our current circumstances.
Whether you are working from home, or you’re looking for a way to stay on top of your other at-home tasks, here are five ways to maintain a productive atmosphere at home.
Minimize Distractions
No matter where you are, there is no denying that the world is full of distractions. It can be comforting, then, to watch your favorite streaming content. Sometimes, though, these joys can distract us from our pressing responsibilities. Maybe instead of watching your favorite TV show while you work, you can try listening to some music, a podcast or an audiobook. Noise cancelling headphones virtually eliminate any outside noise and allow you to focus on your auditory content. If you are someone who can’t have any media playing while you work, then they can also just help drown out the sounds of your environment.
If you are more distracted by gazing out your window or family interruptions, set up some ground rules for yourself. Create a designated, clutter-free space to work from. Schedule brief breaks in your day to break up the monotony of sitting in the same spot all day long. You’ll be less likely to daydream or watch passersby.
Work More, Shop Less
Keep track of what you need to have on hand at home so you don’t waste time going to the store. Of course, it always seems like there’s something to forget. That’s where mobile delivery apps come in handy. Some apps tailor to local restaurants, others to farm-fresh produce. You can even have over the counter medications and other daily necessities delivered to your door. So, how can these help you stay productive? The less time you spend shopping for groceries and other essentials the more time you can spend on your job. Maybe you have a headache midway through your workday but you’ve run out of ibuprofen, or you forgot to thaw out something to make for dinner. Having a solution at your fingertips is a total game-changer.
If you’re more comfortable shopping yourself but still need to stay in touch with your colleagues, make sure you have a top-notch communication app installed on your phone with the notifications on. That way you’ll be in contact with clients and coworkers while maintaining some mobility.
Stick to the Schedule
Another great way to stay productive is by getting organized. Create a fun daily schedule or habit-tracker with Zinnia — similar to the one you had when you worked on-site. Instead of laying around in bed while you try to work, get up early(ish), make your coffee or breakfast, and allow yourself some time to wake up. This will clear your brain and allow you to organize your thoughts for the upcoming day. Plus, maybe you can spend a little extra time with your pets or family.
A little “me” time never hurt, either. As great as it is to be home while you work, it’s important to manage your time properly. Don’t spend too much of your time relaxing in your backyard or watching “one more” episode of your TV show during your lunch break. Reference your planner consistently, settle on a schedule and stick to it.
Find the Balance
Juggling your personal and professional lives is beyond challenging. This can sometimes seem oddly more challenging now that you are working from home. Remember that clutter-free, designated workspace that helped with distractions? It can also help you to separate your personal and professional lives. Once you’re done with work, keep it at your workspace. You, and your loved ones, will be glad that you did.
Don’t overwork yourself, either. Keep your own expectations in check by not piling on too many responsibilities. With 33% of employees working on the weekend, it’s staggering just how important it is to be as efficient as possible during your regular workweek. A healthy work-life balance may seem like an impossible skill to achieve, but with some strategic thinking and some trial and error you’ll be on your way to finding what works best for you.
Plan Ahead
Now that you have minimized distractions, created a healthy work environment, and discovered some digital tools to help you stay on task, you might think you’re ready for anything. That’s when something unexpected happens: you’ve forgotten an upcoming doctor’s appointment, there’s been a sudden change of plan and you need to take your kids to their soccer practice, or any number of other potential circumstances. What can you do to prepare yourself for the unknown?
Maintain accurate notes and records of all of your daily activities. Prioritize accordingly so you don’t miss out on the important things. If you need to schedule a meeting but you remembered to make a note of that upcoming appointment or family event, then you can have a stronger hold on your daily schedule and anticipate any upcoming deviations.
Conclusion
No matter how permanently you will be working from home, creating a healthy environment to work within is vital to your success. By remembering these tips to help re-organize your workflow, improvements are all but guaranteed.
