“Good” Art Vol. 2 | Projects That Are Making Life Better

May 31, 2021

By Siobhan Stewart

Art is inventive, abstract, creative – but it can also be utilitarian and purposeful. Each month we are highlighting “Good” Art projects – creatives who are making a positive impact through art.

Storycorps: Chicago, Atlanta, and mobile locations.

Storycorps is an organization that records and saves conversations for a permanent auditory library of stories. It believes in the importance and societal impact of sharing and learning from each other.

“StoryCorps’ mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world.”

The Hackney Mosaic Project: Hackney, London, UK.

When seeking an outlet for her own neglected medium, mosaicist Tessa Hunkin founded the Mosaic Project—a community organization seeking to aid people with addiction and mental health challenges while beautifying London’s neglected parks and neighborhoods.

“The Project does not just make colourful pictures out of broken fragments – it also helps to piece back broken lives, and build a new community by bringing people together around a shared vision.”

Justice Arts Coalition (JAC): USA.

The JAC believes that creative expression in both a human right and need, essential for healing and community-building. Their network seeks its presence in carceral settings, amplifying its unsung voices while shaping public dialogue around the arts and justice.

“Justice Arts Coalition (JAC) unites teaching artists, arts advocates, currently and formerly incarcerated artists, and allies, harnessing the transformative power of the arts to reimagine justice.”
